Life made simple

Welcome to the best week of the year.

We shopped till our feet fell off, we fought the crowds in the malls and on the beaches and in the traffic jams. We’re all feasted out and gifted out and partied out.

Do you hear that sound of nothing?

That’s the calm after the crazy-storm that was the peak of the festive season. Let’s all heave a collective sigh of relief, and celebrate the peace, as it all winds down.

And now, for most of us, it’s that blissful first week of the year before the real 2017 starts.  In a few days, we’ll put on ironed clothes and shiny shoes and show up for the jobs we left last month. But for now, let’s put up our feet and enjoy doing nothing.

“But I can’t sit still and do nothing!” we hear some voices say. OK then, here’s some easy stuff that’s not too strenuous and rather satisfying:

De-clutter.

Use this week to toss or give away all the unwanted, unused clutter that’s been building up for months. You’ll love the freedom of less stuff.

Tidy a Cupboard.

Just one, for a start. Perhaps in the kitchen? Get your grocery cupboard organised. Throw out old empty bottles and jars, and restock with the basics and essentials. Oh, and your freezer. Out with the old. In with a few fresh bags of frozen wonderfulness. (Natures Garden, hello.)

Don’t push yourself too hard, though. Remember, it’s still do-nothing time, so feel free to return to the sofa at any time.

Happy 2017.

PS. While you’re on the sofa, you might want to pick up a gripping read called The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up. Yes, really. According to the author, Marie Kondo, living tidy really could change everything. Marie’s method is based on a ‘once-cleaned, never-messy-again’ approach. If you think that such a thing is impossible then you should definitely flip through this clever little book.
