Here in the sun-drenched south of Africa, we get so much good, sunny weather that we take it for granted. How many South Africans living in colder, grimmer climates haven’t you heard complain about the grey skies that they endure for most of the year?
So, while it’s still sunny and warm, here are a few things you should be doing, because we know you’ll miss them when summer’s over.
Start every day with a swim, a walk, or just some time outside. Fresh air is magical!
Ride a bike to work, if possible. Yes, we know, not many of you can but if you’re able to, then what’s stopping you?
Have more picnic dinners outside on the patio or lawn. Take your cooked meal on a spur-of-the-moment picnic. Roast chicken is much nicer on a lawn, under a tree.
Fresh air is magical!
Go on a camping weekend. Even if it’s just one night. You don’t have to be Bear Grylls – you can do it in comfort, if you take a camping mattress, and ice buckets.
Get some sun. Vitamin D is your friend, and it’s great medicine if you’re feeling down. (But use sunblock.)
Make fruit salads with all the soft, summer fruit, like peaches, mangos and nectarines – all in season now.
Do at least one outdoor thing every weekend. How about summer sunset music concerts and outdoor movies? Or try outdoor theatre like Maynardville in Cape Town for a memorable evening.
And look out for pomegranates. A red salad isn’t a proper red salad without those beautiful ruby pearls. It’s pomegranate season coming up now, so they’re much cheaper than usual.
